Canvas is the iconic painting surface but it is also woven cloth and tumbled across the floor or folded neatly the relationship between canvas and bed sheet is very clear. The folds of cloth are the sheets pushed back on an empty bed; the lover has left, only  creases and folds  and stains remain.
